THE ASK:

In this paper, I was set to conduct a scholarly analysis of a certain fashion collection by a designer or brand active any time after 1959. Choosing Yohji Yamamoto’s Pour Homme A/W 24-25 collection, I curated a detailed analysis to explore the thematic essence of the collection. Supporting the analysis with visual references and critical writing on how the designer engages with zeitgeist, I was entranced in the world of Yamamoto’s design in fashion, setting, and music mood.

ANALYSIS PROCESS

  • In selecting this collection, I was totally new to the processes and the insides of fashion. I went into this curriculum with zero knowledge and plain interest on the subject as what it stood for and the art form represented greatly with my past and what I wanted to do in the future. I found this collection as I was interested in learning more about the artist. Within this step of the process I ensured that I:

    • Exhibited the requirements for visual documentation and sourcing.

    • Conducted preliminary research via fashion databases, articles, and design history.

    • Sought out inspirations behind the collection and its context.

  • Using insights from the show and Yamamoto’s personal history I:

    • Developed the central theme.

    • Crafted an abstract summarizing this concept.

    • Highlighted the roles of music, symbolic model pairings, and wartime silhouettes.

  • Within the body of this paper, I analyzed key garments and show choreography to properly embellish my writing with learned fashion vernacular and APA formatting. Interpreting the symbolic elements listed in the prior step to support:

    • Inclusions of certain models

    • Inspired silhouettes

    • The theme of human connection and historical memory

  • In finishing this papers layout and context, I organized the referenced images by figure and cited my primary resources, including the fashion show video and credible fashion publications used.

This approach aligned with the assignment’s requirement for visual analysis and scholarly interpretation.

THE OUTCOME

In studying Yohji Yamamoto’s Pour Homme A/W 24-25 collection, I was able to embark on a journey that represented the possibilities of detail one may implement into their design. Written in my first year of college, I reflected upon this analysis as a gateway to the future within the industry, and used these initial moments as inspiration to apply onto my expeditions to come.
